What Are the Standard Tent Sizes for Hire?

Hire tents are built in standard widths — 5m, 6m, 10m and 15m — and lengths grow in 3m bays. That is why you ask for 80 m² and the quote comes back as 6m × 15m: suppliers do not cut fabric to order, they combine bays from stock they already own.

The standard size table

Almost every hire tent in the country is one of these. Seated capacity is calculated at 1.2–1.5 m² per guest.

Why length moves in 3m steps

A frame tent is assembled from repeating bays — a set of legs, a roof section and its bracing, usually 3 metres deep. The crew adds bays until the tent is long enough. That is why 10m × 15m and 10m × 18m both exist but 10m × 16m does not, and why asking for a slightly bigger tent sometimes costs nothing and sometimes costs a whole bay.

Width is different. Width is fixed by the frame system a supplier owns, so moving from 10m to 15m is not a step up in the same product — it is different stock, often a different crew size, and the price reflects that.

Reading a size against your guest count

Work out the area before you look at any tent. Seated guests at 1.2–1.5 m² each, plus 0.5 m² per guest if there is dancing, plus 10–25 m² for a buffet or bar. Then find the smallest standard size that clears it. Sizing to the seated number alone is the single most common hire mistake — the dance floor, gift table and bar all have to come out of the same footprint.

Stretch tents are the exception: they are not built in bays, and their curved edges lose usable floor at the perimeter, so a stretch tent seats slightly fewer than a marquee of the same nominal footprint.

Each of these answers one question from the other end of the same decision:

What is in stock in Durban

The metro range these figures come from is at tent hire in Durban. The eThekwini fleets carry 5m and 6m widths in depth and 10m widths in reasonable numbers; 15m spans are the thin stock and book out first for December and the wedding season. Local bands by size sit in tent hire prices in Durban, with the full ladder on the frame tent hire price list.

Common questions

What is the most common tent size for hire?

The 5m × 10m at 50 m². It seats about 50 guests, fits most suburban gardens, and every hire fleet carries it in depth — which is why it is also the easiest size to book at short notice.

Why did I get quoted a different size to the one I asked for?

Hire tents are assembled from fixed bays, usually 3 metres deep, in standard widths of 5m, 6m, 10m and 15m. Suppliers combine bays from stock rather than building to your exact area, so quotes land on the nearest standard size up.

Are stretch tent sizes the same?

No. Stretch tents are not built in bays and their curved edges lose usable floor at the perimeter, so a stretch tent seats slightly fewer guests than a marquee of the same nominal size.
